Raspberry Pi
Raspberry Pi, as an idea, came into being in 2005 when Cambridge University noticed that the caliber and numbers enrolling in computer engineering was dropping (17). In the modern era of computing, technology was becoming more and more seamless and not inviting users to get inside, to understand the inner workings of devices. This meant that students were only operating midway, at the applying level in Blooms Digital Taxonomy, to successfully undertake computer engineering students needed to be operating at the higher order thinking levels and ideally at the creating level to be able to plan, produce and program for computing (16, p. 35).
To help alleviate the issue Eben Upton, Rob Mullins, Jack Lang and Alan Mycroft decided to devise a small cheap computer with the intention of it being used by young people and inspiring young people to start programming. By 2011 the first Raspberry Pi became available to purchase and within two years over two million units had been sold (17). Raspberry Pies are quickly becoming a popular tool to help teach coding and programming skills to students.
